Consuelo lives in Mexico and lives with her parents and older sister Gabriella in an apartment over the bakery they run as a family. The book talks about the types of things they traditionally bake, including gingerbread pigs, and how her grandmother passed down many of the recipes to her parents. It breaks Consuelo's heart to see hungry children gathering outside their shop, attracted by the delicious smells and beautiful food on display, and she had an idea. Every day instead of throwing away any baked goods they would give them to the children. They would leave water for them to wash in before eating and milk for the children to drink. Some of the children helped sweep the courtyard as a way of thanking Consuelo and her family. A wonderful story about helping others to encourage girls of today to make a small difference themselves, one heart at a time.
